General Information about Performance-Based Assessment and Rubrics

The Ideas and Rubrics web page sponsored by the Chicago Public Schools has an introduction to the reasons for using performance-based assessments and rubrics, guidelines for creating high-quality rubrics, descriptions and purposes of the different kinds of rubrics and criteria for evaluating the rubrics themselves.

As part of a Technology Challenge Grant sponsored by the San Diego City Schools, Dr. Nancy Pickett has created a generalized rubric template teachers can use to understand and build rubrics.

Rubric Metasite

The Discovery Channel School website sponsors Kathy Schrock's Guide for Educators - an education metasite with links to hundreds of online resources for teachers, students and parents. Included is an Assessment and Rubric Information Page that has a long list of all kinds of rubric sites. The kinds of resources listed include subject-specific and general rubrics, electronic portfolios, and graphic organizers. This site is a definite must-see for teachers.

WebQuest Projects
Dr. Bernie Dodge, professor of Educational Technology at San Diego State University and one of the original developers of the WebQuest model, has an excellent online WebQuest rubric  that includes a description of the basic strategies for teachers to use in creating their own rubrics as well as a template for generating good criteria for rubrics.
Graphic Organizer (Inspiration) Projects
Dr. Alice Christie at Arizona State University West  has a rubric for evaluating design of Inspiration projects
Multimedia Presentations
MidLink Magazine  sponsored by North Carolina State University  and the University of Central Florida  includes a well-designed rubric for evaluating student multimedia presentations.

Customizable Rubrics and Online Rubric Makers

Rubistar is a free resource from 4teachers.org. The site contains links to a wide range of customizable rubrics for various kinds of project based learning multimedia activities.  Users can select preset categories, revise them, or create their own; users also the option of editing criteria. In addition, Rubistar has a feature that allows teachers to enter student scores to evaluate the overall performance of the entire class for each item.

The rubrics are designed to evaluate projects such as:

David Warlick's Landmark Project  has an online Rubric Builder  that allows a teacher to create a personal rubric or search through a database of rubrics created by other teachers. (Note: the Landmark project has a number of other online resources including a citation machine and a "net" evaluation and collection tool.)
