Dr. Dorothy J. Lovett

DISTINGUISHED ALUMNI AWARD

dotlovett

This biannual award was established in 2007 by Dr. Mary Steinhardt to recognize the excellence of graduates from The University of Texas at Austin Department of Kinesiology and Health Education.

The award honors a KHE alumnus who has distinguished himself or herself professionally and has made outstanding contributions not only to the profession of Health Education, but to society as a whole. The award recognizes superior educators and those who have made significant contributions to the profession.

Dr. Steinhardt intends the award to memorialize the contributions made to the University of Texas at Austin by Dr. Dorothy J. (Dot) Lovett, former KHE Department Chair and friend and mentor to many in the department, students and faculty alike.

Please see the News and Events page for information on current and past award winners!

  About Dr. Lovett:

Dr. Dorothy J. Lovett (Dot) was the Kinesiology and Health Education department chair for 11 years and a full-time faculty member in the department for 38 years. During Dot’s tenure as chair, the department had unprecedented growth with the institution of our undergraduate sport management and health promotion and fitness programs and the reinstatement of the teacher certification program.  Dot also oversaw important additions and changes in our graduate programs.  Significant additions included the additions of our sport science and nutrition and clinical exercise physiology tracks in the exercise physiology program, and the addition and restructuring of curriculum necessary for the sport management program to be one of the few in North America to gain NASPE/NASSM program approval.  There was also the strengthening of programs with the hiring of many new faculty in health education, motor behavior, exercise physiology, sport psychology and sport management.

Dot assumed the position of chair at a time when there was a great deal of uncertainty as to the future of our department in the College of Education.  However, she became a highly effective ambassador for our department and won the respect, support and admiration of college and university administrators.  Dot made significant changes in the department’s operating procedures, which improved faculty and staff productivity and camaraderie.  She initiated and supervised the development of a department strategic plan that served as the model for the other departments in the College of Education.  Because of her dedication and significant contributions to the Department of Kinesiology and Health Education, we are proud to establish this scholarship in her honor.  May her contributions to our department be remembered always.
