When the students in Dr. Mary Steinhardt’s Leadership class were assigned a project to educate fellow students on The University of Texas at Austin campus, they wanted to undertake a task that would help others.

One of the students introduced the topic of organ donation and another relayed the story of surgeon and former Texas Medical Association President, Dr. Phil Berry, a liver recipient whom she met at a presentation last year. The doctor contracted Hepatitis B while performing surgery on a patient. The disease ruined his liver and he needed a transplant in order to live. “The class felt compelled to help educate the university students about the organ donor shortage after I told them about Dr. Berry,” stated Alexandra Masters, a freshman at the University of Texas at Austin.
