HED 373: Evaluation and Research Design
COURSE DESCRIPTION
This course is designed to assist students in obtaining the necessary skills to understand research methods and to conduct successful program evaluations in health promotion settings. Topics include measurement of health knowledge, attitudes, and behaviors, types of experimental and non-experimental research, validity, reliability, experimental and quasi-experimental research designs, data collection procedures, data analysis, and the presentation of results. This course contains a substantial writing component and fulfills part of the basic education requirement in writing.
COURSE GOALS
1. To understand the purpose and process of program evaluation
2. To enable students to develop a knowledge and understanding of the nature and function of research
3. To familiarize students with methods for assessing validity and reliability
4. To familiarize students with basic research designs as well as their strengths and limitations
5. To familiarize students with fundamentals of data collection, description, and analysis
6. To enable students to understand and interpret research findings, and use this knowledge to plan and evaluate health promotion programs
7. To provide students with the opportunity to plan the major elements of a formal program evaluation research project
8. To prepare a 20-page program evaluation research proposal

HED 327L: Fieldwork in Health Promotion
COURSE DESCRIPTION
Educational opportunities are available for students interested in joining a wellness team devoted to enhancing the wellbeing of employees in the Division of Housing and Food Service (DHFS). The wellness program is coordinated by the DHFS Office of Organizational Diversity and Development. Facilitation and instructor support are provided by graduate and undergraduate students from Health Promotion and Health Behavior within the Department of Kinesiology and Health Education.
