The last thing I wanted to do when I finished my doctoral work was to write another paper, you know what I mean? Besides, my topic hardly works on paper. Then, I had a brillant idea -- what about doing my dissertation as a multimedia project?

My topic-- The Peripatetic Methodology of the Velociraptor, didn't work very well on paper. How was I going to show them walking around? I'm still working on it (my grants/loans haven't run out yet!), so I can't really show it to you.

But I can show you one that a student did for her doctoral work in Speech Communications: Leslie Jarmon's digital dissertation.

Tips for Creating a Digital Dissertation

  • Make sure your project is one that will work in multimedia. My fabulous project, of course will. An Examination of the Letters of Dead Presidents to Their Mistresses will not work unless you discover some secret recordings!

  • Is your department (and all the many university officials) open to having your dissertation digitally published?

  • Are you ready to give up a large portion of your life to be a trailblazer?

Well, then, set your deadlines and get to work!
