Austin ISD PER Workshop - January 10, 2004

On January 10th we conducted the sixth in a series of Austin-based PER workshops. We invited the in service teachers who have been involved with our PT3 grant and previous PER workshops. In addition, two new teachers joined our group.

Participants and Schedule of Events

The focus of this sixth workshop was to provide additional and sustained assistance to the teachers as they continued to design original LEGACY cycles. The new teachers were given separate presentations in order to familiarize them with the process of curriculum design.

The experienced teachers were given a template in which to “drag and drop” their curriculum materials for their LEGACY cycles. Carol Lee gave a presentation on using Netscape Composer as this served as the template editor for their work. Carol and Hao served as technical troubleshooters as teachers worked to design their units and learn the editing process.

The second group of teachers were given presentations by Barb Austin on McTighe and Wiggins “Understanding by Design” (1999) curriculum writing (download presentation - part I and part II). Austin’s activities focused on helping the teachers frame their essential questions as they addressed the desired enduring understandings that their students will learn from the unit.

Cherie McCollough presented information on VaNTH – ERC, John Bransford’s “How People Learn” (1999) framework, and the instructional components of the LEGACY Cycle (download presentation). Austin and McCollough also assisted the experienced teachers as they extended their work from previous workshops in developing their units.

At the completion of the workshop, all teachers gave an update on their progress of their LEGACY cycle development. An additional workshop is planned in the near future to finalize development and get constructive feedback as the experienced teachers’ final design is presented to the group, and to continue supportive assistance for the new teachers. Teachers are planning implementation of their units during the current semester.
