Austin ISD PER Workshop - December 7, 2002
On December 7, 2002 we conducted
an Austin based PER workshop. In an effort to leverage resources here at the
University of Texas, we opened this workshop to in service teachers already
involved with our PT3 grant.
Participants and Schedule of Events
|
The purpose of the PT3 grant is to
develop a scalable model of an integrated, technology-infused educational
experience for the next generation of high school and middle school teachers of
mathematics and science. PT3 brings together key players from the three strands
involved in preservice education -UT science and math content courses, UT
teaching methods courses, and AISD field experience- facilitate collaboration
among them; and provide the technology-related support needed to model
exemplary educational technology in science and mathematics. By working
together, AISD and UT will provide a seamless, integrated experience for
preservice teachers that demonstrates best practices in technology and
pedagogy.
|
|
By using PT3 Fellows we were
assured of teachers who both possessed and were comfortable with technology in
their classroom. The goal of this workshop was to begin the incorporation of
deep content knowledge with technological resources. There were three main
presentations throughout the day. Richard Vath and Tony Petrosino gave an
overview of the LEGACY Cycle with both it’s practical as well as theoretical
underpinnings. Marsha Ricks and Cherie McCollough dicussed work they have been
doing on a unit centered on optics and finally Shelly Rodriguez and Richard
Vath presented a unit currently under development concentrated on the issue of
bioethics.

|
The rationale for this workshop
was to introduce the teachers to some possibilities that exist for the Spring
2003 semester in terms of classroom interventions. In addition, it is hoped
that eventually this group of PT3 teachers will develop their own VaNTH related
LEGACY cycles centered on secondary and middle school mathematics and science
topics.
