Jersey City PER Workshop - June 24-28, 2002

June 24th- June 28th, 2001
St. Peter’s Preparatory School
Middle School Teachers Institute
Jersey, City, NJ

As part of the VaNTH ERC Education outreach initiative, a K-12 workshop was held in Jersey City, NJ for middle school teachers by PER principal investigator Tony Petrosino of UT-Austin.

Middle School Teachers conduct “reaction time” experiments in the lab. This activity also examined distribution of data, variance, and data analysis.

Over the course of the five day workshop, the teachers were exposed to an overview of the VaNTH ERC project, an overview of the LEGACY cycle framework, and an in-depth look at the LEGACY unit on JUMPING.

In addition, an extensive Hands-On activity was done on reaction time, an introduction to the Mission to Mars unit and a visit to the Liberty Science Center in Jersey City.

Throughout the workshop, teachers were given a first-hand look at the modules by working through many of the incorporated lab activities. Since many of the teachers in attendance taught on the middle school level, these first-hand experiences were especially valuable because the teachers were able to look critically at the modules to determine what components could be changed or adapted for use in middle school mathematics and science. By the conclusion of the workshop, several of the teachers had begun to develop instructional sequences for use in their own mathematics and science classrooms in the fall.

Peer’s helping peers was an essential element of the workshop.

In the coming year, our hope is that we can continue to collaborate with these teachers and others in the PER family of school districts including, Austin Independent School District and San Antonio School District to redesign activities and modules based on bioengineering to be implemented by NSF supported outreach programs and NSF supported preservice teacher training program (UTeach).
