Austin ISD PER Workshop - March 6, 2004

On Saturday, March 6th we conducted the eighth in a series of Austin-based PER workshops.

Participants and Schedule of Events

During the morning, the teachers engaged in a lively discussion about determining a suitable scope for a single challenge; this discussion was moderated by Barb Austin. By the end of the conversation, the teachers realized the importance of making challenges suitably narrow: complex topics are better taught by creating muliple, sequential challenge cycles rather than trying to teach complicated concepts in a single cycle.

The majority of our teachers were able to complete their Legacy Cyles and upload them to the internet. You can see copies of their products at: http://www.edb.utexas.edu/per/  Barb Austin and Cherie McCollough assisted the teachers in completing their units. Hao Cen and Kavita Kandradikar provided technical expertise in assisting the teachers. In addition, VaNTH SLC member Leighton Ngai attended the workshop.

The teachers will be implementing their cycles in their classrooms in the next several weeks. Members of Dr. Petrosino’s research group will be collecting data and videotaping these presentations in order to assess the projects and provide important information for further development. In June, the teachers will be attending a 3 day VaNTH-PER summer workshop in order to continue to deepen and extend their current challenges.
