Objectives and Specific Aims - Background - Redesign of VaNTH Modules - Significance

The objective of this project is to establish a close collaboration between participants in the service of K-12 teachers involved with the San Antonio USI (USI-9554484), the Austin Independent School District, preservice teachers at The University of Texas at Austin, and the NSF VaNTH Engineering Research Center (ERC) of Bioengineering Educational Technologies (VaNTH is an ERC involving Vanderbilt University, Northwestern University, U. Texas Austin and the Harvard-MIT Health Sciences and Technology Program). The goals of this PER are to:

• Enlist mathematics and science teachers from these districts to help design and evaluate instructional materials that use bioengineering and related sciences as anchors and challenges for the teaching of science fundamentals at various levels in K-12.
• Collaborate with pre and inservice science teachers as well as USI associates to redesign activities and modules based on bioengineering to be implemented by NSF supported outreach programs (San Antonio USI) and NSF supported preservice teacher training program (UTeach).
