Intermediate Palm Pilot
 |
Printing Demo: - The workshop began with a roundtable discussion. Teachers discussed their use
of the Palm Pilots, and what they thought the limitations were. To help fuel discussion, the presenter
demonstrated Palm printing via infrared. The participants were amazed that this was even possible, and
wanted to know what other technologies were available.
|
Software Applications: - The workshop began with a tour of the
Mobile Mentor CD, a suite
of applications offered by Palm highlighting interesting and powerful opportunities for PDAs in education.
Teachers learned how to install and use these programs, and discussed potential applications in their
classrooms.

eBooks on PDAs - The workshop also included a section on locating, downloading, and reading electronic texts
on PDAs. The teachers were excited to find that literally tens of thousands of works are available free in the public
domain, and thousands more are for sale. Participants exchanged books through "beaming" and discussed the possibilities
of eBooks in their classrooms.
|
|
Network Syncing - As their understanding of synchronization grew, participants were introduced to the
capability of Palm devices to synchronize with their "Primary PC" from any Internet-connected
cradle. The teachers discussed the value of not needing to be tied to their own PC for synchronization, and
were also shown the capabilities of the Palm Ethernet Cradle.

Retrieving Websites - Using free software provided by AvantGo, participants
were trained on how to download websites to their PDA for offline viewing. This sparked discussion about placing
classroom websites on the handheld device, so that teachers and students could always have the latest information
about assignments, class activities, and other course information.

Download Powerpoint (576k) - This is the PowerPoint(TM) presentation used
in all three workshops. Please contact us if you would like to use elements of this presentation in another work.
