In 1995, 15 iguanas were displaced from the Virgin Islands by Hurricane Marilyn, floating on a raft of trees for a month before landing on Anguilla, an island in the Caribbean with no pre-existing iguana population. If these scaly adventurers are to survive and flourish in their new home they will have to adapt to their new environment. Time will only tell if these adaptations could lead to reproductive isolation from other Iguana iguana, birthing a new species. In this cycle you will explore speciation, the process through which one species divides into two. Particular attention will be paid to allotropic, or geographic, speciation. |
