“Language is one of the most powerful human resources needed to maintain a sense of self-identity and self-fulfillment. Without a command of one’s own language, ethnic identity, the sharing of fundamental cultural values and norms, the social context of interpersonal communication that guides interactional understandings and the feeling of belonging within a group are not possible.” – Trueba, 1993
This website serves to inform community members, educators, and policy makers about the important issues surrounding bilingual education in Texas. Bilingual programs have long been met with debate from “English-Only” movements and those who support a student’s right to maintain their native tongue. These pages are dedicated to outlining the history of the program’s development, offering resources to educate policy makers, and reviewing the community’s role in the progress of bilingual education.
