Facilities

The Human Performance Laboratory (HPL) is located in Bellmont Hall and it occupies approximately 1,850 sq ft. Adjoining the HPL, is a 1,000 sq ft biochemistry laboratory as well as a subject locker room. The facilities also contain an Environmental Exercise Laboratory which is 900 sq ft room containing two environmental chambers (each 15 X 12 ft.) The HPL is equipped with numerous cycle ergometers (i.e.; LODE, Velotron, Monarchs) and a Quinton treadmill built into the floor. Oxygen consumption and cardiac output in humans are measured with a Perkin Elmer mass spectrometer as well as metabolic carts (2X). Cardiovascular function can be assessed using near infra-red spectroscopy, laser-Doppler mediated skin blood flow and impedance cardiography etc. The biochemistry laboratory is equipped with spectrophotometers, fluorometer, microtome cryostat, gamma counter, liquid scintillation counter, HPLC system, co-oximeter, osmometer, electrolyte analyzer, plate readers, centrifuges, balances, freezers, fume hood, and water purification system
