POINT BREAKDOWN: 100 Points Test 1 100 Points Second Interview 100 Points Novice-Expert Interview 100 Points Final/Project 100 Points for Completing Reading Responses ======================================== 500 Points Total ATTENDANCE: Attendance and participation are crucial to this class. Attendance will be taken every class period. Missing four class (i.e., more than 10% of the classes) will result in ONE FULL LETTER GRADE REDUCTION Attendance Check 08420 (8:00 a.m.) 08425 (9:30 a.m.) 08430 (11:00 a.m.)
READING RESPONSES: Readings (and discussions) are a significant part of the course. Reading response questions are posted on the web and you are expected to either type in or cut-and-paste in (from your word processor) your answers on the web page. Reponses are due by 3:00 pm on the day BEFORE the class for which the assignment is made. This is done to allow time for a review of the responses BEFORE class so that the class can be structured, in part, by these responses. Some of the questions are relatively "factual" and will come straight out of the readings. Other questions are more opinion oriented. The computer keeps a log of when answers are submitted. Late responses will count 75% of an on-time response (50% if submitted a week or more late). You are allowed to miss one reading response. We will allow a 10 minute grace period in case there is significant web traffic at or around 3:00 pm.
TEST: There are two parts to tests: a short answer part and an "essay" part. Typically the short answer questions are a subset of the reading response questions. The essay is focused on making sense of student reasoning. Usually I will find an excerpt from an interview or from something a student has created and ask you to make sense of what the student has done and form judgements about what the student might subsequently be able to do and how you might direct the student's subsequent engagement.
PROJECT The Project is an alternative to the final. The project is described on the web.
FINAL: In the past the final has had sections like the tests and/or a selection of essay questions. In the past potential essay questions have been posted in advance of the final. A subset of these have appeared on the final and often students are asked to respond to a subset of these (e.g., answer two out of the three essay questions).
INTERVIEWS: These are to be discussed in class and on web. Current Grades 08420 (8:00 a.m.) 08425 (9:30 a.m.) 08430 (11:00 a.m.)
