Getting
Numbers with Operations
Grade Level: Any Middle School Math Class
Materials needed: Teacher: Overhead and overhead pens. Students: Paper and pencil
1.) At the beginning of class have the students list all multiples of the number six. They should start with the number six and continue until they get to the number one hundred or the closest number they can get to with out going over.
2.) Once item one has been done then the teacher will circle numbers at random to continue to the next step in the exercise.
3.) Once the previous two steps have been done instruct the students to come up with the circled number using the following applications : multiplication, addition, division, and subtraction. Tell the students that they must use all the steps at least once to come up with the circled number.
Example:
Work: 18*5=90
90+5=95
95/5=19
19-1=18
NOTE: After the students use the applications once they can use one twice
or more if they need to. This will help you, the instructor, determine where
strengths and weaknesses are by seeing which application is used most and
less frequently.
Steps 4 through 6 increases the activities difficulty.
4) Using all four applications and making one of the numbers you work with a decimal find the next circled number. The number is 24.
Example:
Work: 24/3=8
8-1.5=6.5
6.5*2=13
13+11=24
5) Using all four applications and making two of the numbers you work with decimals find the next circled number. The number is 30.
Example:
Work: 30-12=18
18/6=3
3*7.2=21.6
21.6+8.4=30
6) Using all four applications and making one of the numbers you work with a negative number find the next circled number. The number is 36.
Example:
Work: 36/4=9
9*3=27
27+3=30
30-(-6)=36
