While my teaching approach and philosophy is constantly evolving (hopefully in a positive way), I have found a few critical influences. For a course to be effective, the material has to be relevant and meaningful. When creating assignments and preparing lectures, I try to consider how to get students involved with and connected to the material. I also consider creativity and flexibility to be central teaching characteristics. Creativity needs to be in the classroom to keep the material interesting and the learning process dynamic. Flexible teachers are able to adapt their teaching styles to meet the needs and preferences of different learning styles. I also recognize the importance of being resourceful. At UT, it has been a luxury to use technology when teaching and I try and do so each class. Finally, a good class should be enjoyable but also challenging. I hope that the degree of effort each student commits to my course is met with an equal level of reward and satisfaction.
