| The mission of our laboratory is to investigate how the central nervous system controls muscle force under various conditions in younger and older adult populations. We record surface and intramuscular electromyographic activity to determine single motor unit firing patterns during fatigue and following resistance and endurance training. We also program the frequencies encoded by the central nervous system that maximize force output and decrease the rate of fatigue during voluntary muscle contractions into functional electrical stimulation protocols to enable limb movement in persons affected by muscle paralysis from spinal cord injury and stroke.
