Undergraduate Degree FAQ
6. What is the maximum number of PED (Physical Education) classes I can take? Do grades in my PED coursework count in my UT GPA?
A maximum of three semester hours in physical education activity courses can be counted as free electives in the College of Education (this does not include KIN 119 classes). The grades will count toward the GPA.
7. Do I have to take a language other than English? How many courses do I need to take?
Students in the College of Education are required to show second semester college-level proficiency in a language other than English (rather than complete a certain number of classes). Proficiency can be proven through coursework or a placement test offered through the UT Austin Measurement and Evaluation Center.
Students who are NOT pursuing Teacher Certification and have completed at least two years of a single language other than English in high school may choose to substitute nine semester hours of approved coursework for the language other than English requirement. The list of approved courses can be obtained in the Student Division of the College of Education Dean's Office, SZB 216, or in BEL 1005.
8. Can I use American Sign Language as my language other than English?
American Sign Language (ASL) will count as a language other than English, but these courses are popular and registration can be difficult. If you want to use ASL to meet the language other than English requirement, it may be easier to take the courses at a community college.
9. What is the maximum number of hours I can take a semester?
You are allowed to take up to seventeen semester hours for each fall and spring semester. During the summer session, you are allowed to take a maximum of fourteen hours, with no more than eight semester hours in a six-week term. Anything above that must be approved by an academic advisor in the Student Division of the College of Education Dean's Office, SZB 216, or in BEL 1005.
10. What can I take at a junior or community college during the summer?
Students can find out about course equivalencies for other Texas institutions at the Student Division of the College of Education Dean's Office, SZB 216, BEL 1005, or the UT Austin Office of Admissions, MAIN 7. Students can also use the online Automated Transfer Equivalency System for in-state equivalencies. Students should consult these sources BEFORE taking classes over the summer. Students taking courses outside of Texas should get their courses pre-approved through the UT Austin Office of Admissions.
11. Can I concurrently enroll at Austin Community College during a long semester?
The College of Education allows concurrent enrollment during the long semester as long as a student is in good standing at the University of Texas at Austin. Students may also concurrently enroll at A.C.C. during a summer session.
12. How many hours can I transfer in from a community college?
To graduate from the University of Texas at Austin, students under the 2004-2006 catalog and later must complete a minimum of sixty semester hours in residence. Additionally, students may only transfer in six out of the last thirty hours counting towards their degree. However, most students in the College of Education graduate with at least sixty semester hours in residence due to the nature of the degree plans. Generally, you will run out of transferable courses available at the community college before you reach a limit on transfer hours.
