Current Graduate Student Information
What Conference(s) Can I Attend Or Give A Presentation?
Attending regional, national, and international conferences benefits SME graduate students in numerous ways including meeting other math & science education researchers and discussing the latest research developments; disseminating research findings to researchers and teachers; initiating cross-institutional collaborations; and becoming initiated to the national and international communities of math & science education researchers and teacher educators. The value to the faculty are that our SME graduate students return from the conference with the knowledge that they gained at the conference, ready to share with students and faculty in research groups and class discussions, and ready to apply that knowledge to their research. The University of Texas also benefits as outstanding SME graduate students represent our reputation of excellence to students and faculty from other Universities around the globe and help them to understand what it means when they hear that at UT Austin “What Happens Here Changes The World”.
Who is on the SME Graduate Studies Committee (GSC)?
The SME GSC is composed of tenured and tenured track faculty members with research expertise in Science and Mathematics Education, or related fields in the Colleges of Education and Natural Sciences. In the College of Education, SME members are appointed primarily in the department of Curriculum and Instruction.
How Do I Get Advised?
The Science and Mathematics Education Faculty team up to assist the Graduate Adviser for SME with advising of our graduate students. Each student is assigned a "Course Reviewer" when they are admitted to the program.
What Courses Count Towards The Research Requirements?
SME doctoral students are required to complete 12 hours in doctoral level research courses, including 3 hours of Introductory Quantitative methods, 3 hours of Introductory Qualitative methods, and 6 hours of Advanced Methods of any kind. (Courses offerings are always in flux and courses other than the ones listed here may also fulfill these requirements. If you’re unsure, ask the Graduate Advisor.)
What Are The SME Degree Plan Options?
The Science and Mathematics Education area provides Master of Arts (M.A.), Master of Education (M.Ed.), and Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) degree programs.
How Do I Register For Classes?
There are many parts to the registration process, most of which can be completed through the Office of the Registrar online system. There are times when a student must work through the program office to register or to change his/her registration. Clearing advising bars, adding or dropping courses, and changing the grade status of courses are just a few of the registration tasks that can be completed through the program office. Each of these tasks requires one or more forms to be completed and turned into the program office for processing.
How Do I Advance To Doctoral Candidacy?
There are many education conferences that occur annually that are relevant to the field of Science and Mathematics Education. This list is not exhaustive.
