Prerequisites
You must have a bachelor’s degree to apply for the SME master’s degree program.
You must have a master’s degree, plus teaching experience, to apply for the doctoral degree program. Teaching experience is not considered tutoring or substitute teaching.
Exceptions may be made for students with extensive experience in the field.

How To Apply
- Fill out the online Texas Common Application at https://www.applytexas.org/adappc/commonapp.WBX. Select Math Education or Science Education for your major. Please DO NOT CHOOSE Curriculum and Instruction.
- Take the GRE at a location near you (or Here at UT.) Fall applicants, please mail a hardcopy of your GRE scores and Transcripts to the SME Graduate Coordinator at the address below. (GRE scores are valid for 5 years).
- Request that electronic copies of your GRE scores and Transcripts be sent to the Graduate
and International Admissions Center (GIAC).
- For Master's degree applicants, we are interested in:
- upper division courses
- not community college courses
- GPA
- For Doctoral degree applicants, we are interested in:
- upper division courses
- master's degree courses
- GPA
- For Master's degree applicants, we are interested in:
- Email a list of your completed upper division Science and Math courses to the Support Staff/Graduate Coordinator.
- Email your Statement of Purpose (MS Word document) to the Support Staff/Graduate Coordinator.
- Email your Resume or Vitae (MS Word document) to the Support Staff/Graduate Coordinator.
- Complete the Program Designation Form and return it to the Support Staff/Graduate Coordinator.
- Letters of Reference - *NEW* On page 6 of the Application you will list your "3 References". After you click "Submit" on your application two emails will automatically be sent to each Reference. One of the emails will contain a hyperlink that will take them to a secure website where they can write and submit their letter of reference for you. After your Reference has submitted their letter, you will be able to see on your checklist that it has been completed. You may ask a 4th or 5th Reference. Start by emailing Marla.Boye@austin.utexas.edu with your full name, UTEID, the full name of the Reference with Title (example: Mrs., Prof., Assoc. Director, Principal), and the Recommender's email address. Marla Boye will send them an electronic reference form that will be logged on your application checklist after the Reference responds.
