Admission Procedures

Applying to the Foreign Language Graduate program is a two-step process:

The first step is apply online for Admission for Graduate Study through the Graduate and International Admissions Center,  and submit all GIAC required materials. The second step is to submit the following departmental materials:

  1. Please download and complete the Curriculum Vitae Form.
  2. Write an essay discussing your academic, research, and study interests. A further discussion of your future professional plans is also in order. This essay is meant to gauge your writing ability and general knowledge in linguistics, language, and literature. At the Ph.D. level, this essay is used to assess your research goals and potential. Essays should not exceed five pages double-spaced.
  3. Mail the completed CV form and essay to:

The University of Texas at Austin
    FOREIGN LANGUAGE EDUCATION
    1 University Station D6500
    Austin, Texas 78712-0389
  4. Three (3) letters of recommendation. There are two ways to submit the letters. Your recommender can submit them via the online system through GIAC or they can mail them directly to the department. The letters only have to be submitted one of the two ways and your recommenders can choose either way, as they do not all have to be submitted under one method. Example: Dr. Smith & Dr. Sreenivasan use the GIAC method, but Dr. Brooks uses the Departmental method.  When filling out the online application, you will be asked for reference names, titles and email addresses.  Be sure the email address is current and accurate.  Recommenders who do not access the link within 45 days, or those who prefer to submit paper references, should submit letters directly to the above address. You may view and print a paper Request for Reference form and send it to your recommender.  Please note: Ph.D. applicants should provide letters of recommendation from their M.A. program.
