Master of Arts (M.A.)

General Requirements

Thesis Option (30 hours)

  • 12 hours in education courses related to field of specialization
  • 12 hours in field of specialization (English, another language. or linguistics)
  • 3 hours may be taken on a CR/NC basis
  • FLE 698A&B (Thesis)

Report Option (Minimum: 33 hours)

  • 18 hours in education courses related to field of specialization
  • 12 hours in field of specialization (English, another language, or linguistics)
  • 6 hours may be taken on a CR/NC basis
  • FLE 398R (Report)

Undergraduate Course Restrictions

  • Maximum of 9 hours of upper-division undergraduate courses in any M.A. Program of Work
  • Maximum of 6 hours of upper-division undergraduate courses in either education or field of specialization

Specific Requirements for each Field of Specialization

English as a Foreign/Second Language

  • EDC 382S ESL/FL Methods I and II (6 hours)
  • 6 graduate hours chosen from Research and Writing Methods in FLE I, Evaluation of FLE, The Second Language Learner, Second Language Acquisition, or Teaching Culture
  • LIN 391 (Studies in English Grammar)
  • E 382J (Studies in Linguistic Analysis)
  • 6 hours of electives in English, with no more than 3 in literature
  • Teaching experience
    • one year of full-time teaching (must be documented) OR
    • two semesters of TA or AI experience OR
  • completion of FLE 397P (Internship) -- offered on CR/NC basis only and excluded from Program of Work

Foreign Language Education (with a specialization in a single language other than English

  • EDC 382S ESL/FL Methods I & II(6 hours)
  • 6 graduate hours chosen from Research and Writing Methods in FLE, Evaluation of FLE, The Second Language Learner, or Second Language Acquisition
  • 3 graduate hours of literature in the language of specialization
  • 3 graduate hours of linguistics in the language of specialization
  • 6 hours of electives in the language of specialization
  • Teaching experience
    • one year of full-time teaching (must be documented) OR
    • two semesters of TA or AI experience OR completion of FLE 397P (Internship) -- offered on CR/NC basis only and excluded from Program of Work

Applied Linguistics with a Concentration in Translation

  • There are no specific course requirements.
  • All courses chosen through advisement (30-33 hours).
  • Prospective Students must contact the Graduate Advisor before applying for this concentration.

Report Option - include 6 additional hours in education
