Kinesiology undergraduates (from l to r) Paola Matheus, Kelly Wright and Ashley Minei took The College of Education to first place at the state level and second place nationally in the American College of Sports Medicine's Student Bowl.

A University of Texas at Austin team of undergraduate kinesiology students who competed in the American College of Sports Medicine’s (ACSM) Student Bowl took second place nationally at the May event in San Francisco. The all-female team won the Texas Student Bowl competition in February and was the first team from The University of Texas at Austin’s College of Education ever to advance to the national level in this competition.

Members of the winning team were Paola Matheus, Ashley Minei and Kelly Wright, and they were competing against nine other national teams.

The Student Bowl is a Jeopardy-style competition that tests students’ knowledge of exercise physiology, exercise testing and prescription, and sports medicine. The College of Education’s team was prepared for the competition by Taka Tarumi and Katie Hudspeth, who are graduate students in Dr. Hirofumi Tanaka’s lab in the Department of Kinesiology and Health Education (KHE).

The KHE was ranked third in the nation by the American Academy for Kinesiology and Physical Education and is part of the number one ranked (by U.S. News & World Report among U.S. public universities) College of Education.
