On Jan. 31, College of Education Assistant Dean for Student Affairs Richard Mattingly will be retiring after 14 years with the college and 26 years with the university. Richard Hogeda, academic advising coordinator in the College of Education’s Student Division, will be taking over the position of assistant dean on Feb. 1.
As assistant dean, Mattingly has overseen the daily student support functions of the student division of the dean’s office and been responsible for academic advising programs, new student orientation, degree evaluation, study abroad programs and student organizations.
In 2000, Mattingly won the National Academic Advising Association Outstanding Advisor Award and was recipient of the James Vick Texas Excellence Award for Academic Advising on three different occasions. He’s also a past president of the Academic Counselors Association. Mattingly received his bachelor’s degree in mathematics from The University of Texas at Austin in 1972 and his Master of Education in Counseling and Guidance from Southwest Texas State University in 1984.
As academic advising coordinator, Richard Hogeda has been responsible for maintaining the daily functions of the Kinesiology and Health Education (KHE) Advising Center, which serves around 1,100 College of Education students and is the satellite office for the College of Education’s Student Division.
Hogeda has worked in the College of Education since 1998 and at the university since 1993. Before joining the College of Education, he worked as an admissions counselor in the Freshman Admissions Center at The University of Texas at Austin. Richard has received the James Vick Texas Excellence Award for Academic Advising on two separate occasions and was awarded Sigma Lambda Gamma’s Amethyst Light Award for Outstanding Latino Faculty/Staff in 2011. He received his bachelor’s degree in economics from The University of Texas at Austin in 1993 and his Master of Education in Higher Education Administration/Student Personnel Administration from UT-Austin in May 2002.
"We are more grateful than I can adequately express for Richard Mattingly's contributions to this college - he's just an individual who gives heart and soul to everything he does, and we've been incredibly fortunate to benefit from someone of his dedication and intellect," said Dr. Manuel J. Justiz, dean of the College of Education. "He will certainly be sorely missed. I'm so happy, though, that we're gaining Richard Hogeda as our new assistant dean. He's been with the College of Education for many years and is, like Richard Mattingly, someone who gives nothing less than 100 percent to every task. It's great to have 'one of our own' stepping into this position."
