Roueche’s 40th Anniversary Marked With Scholarship Contributions, Celebratory Event - October 26th, 2010
To celebrate Dr. John E. Roueche’s 40th anniversary as director and professor in The University of Texas at Austin’s Community College Leadership Program (CCLP), CCLP graduates, faculty and staff have contributed more than $50,000 to the John and Suanne Roueche Endowed Scholarship. The CCLP is part of the College of Education’s Department of Educational Administration.
Because of their commitment to the CCLP and to the enrichment of students’ learning experiences, Drs. John and Suanne Roueche have announced that they will make a 1:2 match, contributing one dollar of their own for every two dollars donated before Dec. 31.
The John and Suanne Roueche Endowed Scholarship is one of eight endowed scholarships in the CCLP. It was established to promote vision and leadership in community college education and to support outstanding students in the nationally acclaimed program.
“Dr. Roueche, who is only the second director of the 66-year-old program, has brought life to the concept of total student immersion in theory and practice,” said Dr. Walter Bumphus, chair of the Department of Educational Administration. “He has generated funds that have allowed the CCLP to bring some of the most distinguished chancellors, presidents, vice presidents and other community colleges leaders to our classrooms to share their unique experiences and expertise.
“In addition, he has received multiple awards for his unparalleled contributions to the field of community college leadership. He has earned distinguished graduate status at five notable institutions and been recognized for his prolific writing, which includes 37 books and more than 150 chapters and articles, as well as his research. He has spoken to more than 1,300 community colleges and universities since 1970 and has addressed more than 100 national and regional conferences in the past five years.”
In addition to making significant contributions to the Roueche Endowed Scholarship, current College of Education faculty, staff and students, as well as national community college leaders and more than 300 CCLP graduates participated in Roueche’s 40th anniversary celebration on the eve of the National Institute for Staff and Organizational Development’s (NISOD) 32nd annual conference. Dr. John Roueche and Dr. Suanne Roueche founded NISOD in 1978 as an outreach vehicle and service arm of the Community College Leadership Program.
Established in 1944, the CCLP is the nation's oldest doctoral program with a primary focus on the preparation of key community college leaders. More than 600 students have graduated from the program since its inception, with over 508 in the past 40 years.
