Colt McCoy, 2009 Davey O'Brien Award winner and
2009 Walter Camp Football Foundation Player of the Year.

Longhorn quarterback and College of Education sports management major Colt McCoy has been named winner of the 2009 Maxwell Award, honoring the national collegiate player of the year, and the Davey O'Brien Award, honoring the nation's top quarterback. Both awards were announced Dec. 10 at the ESPNU Home Depot College Football Awards ceremony.

On the same day, McCoy also was named the Walter Camp Football Foundation Player of the Year. He won the WCFF Player of the Year award last season as well, making him one of just three players in the award's 43-year history to be honored twice.

McCoy is Texas' fourth winner of the Maxwell Award, following Vince Young in 2005, Ricky Williams in 1998 and Tommy Nobis in 1965. He is Texas' second winner of the Davey O'Brien Award in the last five years, following Vince Young in 2005, and was a finalist for both awards in 2008.

McCoy also was a finalist for the 2009 William V. Campbell Trophy, given by the National Football Foundation to the top scholar-athlete (won by Florida’s Tim Tebow), and is a finalist for the Heisman Trophy.

This season, McCoy already has won the Johnny Unitas Golden Arm Award (nation's top senior quarterback), is a finalist for the Lowe's Senior CLASS Award and Manning Award (nation's top quarterback) and was named the Big 12 Offensive Player of the Year by both The Associated Press and league's coaches.

McCoy became the all-time “winningest” quarterback in NCAA history when the undefeated, No. 2 ranked Longhorns won against Kansas, the 43rd game for McCoy as a starter. He also is the first quarterback in major college football history to lead a team to four 10-win seasons, first quarterback in Texas history to lead his team to consecutive 12-win seasons and just the second Longhorn, joining Vince Young, to lead his team to consecutive 11-win seasons.

In 2008, McCoy was named 2008 AP Big 12 Offensive Player of the Year and set school records for most career touchdown passes, most touchdown passes in a season, most total touchdowns by a Texas player, most career wins and most career passing yards.

McCoy holds 47 school records including 16 career, 13 single-season, five single-game, six freshman and seven miscellaneous marks. He's scored at least one TD in 30 straight games, is UT's all-time leader in total offense and ranks fourth on the NCAA all-time list.

A National Football Foundation Scholar-Athlete and three-time first-team Academic All-Big 12 selection, McCoy is on schedule to graduate with a degree from The University of Texas at Austin’s College of Education in sports management. He is an honor roll student who earned a grade point average of 3.20 while being a starring quarterback, and he is a three-year member of the National Honor Society. McCoy also is one of The University of Texas at Austin’s most active community service participants, volunteering at Dell Children’s Medical Center, the Children’s Miracle Network telethon, as a mentor at local schools and with Meals on Wheels.  He has been selected to the Allstate AFCA and Big 12 Good Works teams and spent his last two spring breaks traveling to Peru to perform mission work. McCoy regularly serves as a featured speaker representing the Fellowship of Christian Athletes.
