College of Education Faculty Make Top 10 on Productivity Index - January 24, 2008
Four of the College of Education’s program areas have been ranked in the top 10 of the 2007 Faculty Scholarly Productivity Index. The index rates faculty members’ scholarly output and compiles overall institutional rankings on 375 U.S. universities that offer the Ph.D. degree.
To calculate faculty productivity, the index tabulates the number of book and journal articles published by each program’s faculty, as well as journal citations, awards, honors and grants the professors received.
The College of Education ranked in the top 10 in the following categories: curriculum and instruction (6), science education (6), special education (6) and teacher education specific subject areas (10). The College shares the top 10 lists with institutions such as Vanderbilt University, University of California at Berkeley, Michigan State University, University of Washington, University of California at Los Angeles, University of Virginia and New York University.
The productivity index uses Scopus, a database that compiles journal publication and citation data from more than 15,000 journals, and determines the number of books published by searching Amazon.com. Grant information is gathered from federal agencies like the National Endowment for the Humanities and the National Science Foundation, and faculty honors and awards are gathered from the Web sites of 55 different organizations.
The index is published annually, partially financed by the State University of New York at Stony Brook and produced by Academic Analytics.
