Dr. Michele Guzmán, a clinical associate professor in the Department of Educational Psychology, has been selected by University of Texas at Austin president William Powers, Jr., to be part of the 2009 class of Leadership Texas.

Leadership Texas is a program of the Foundation for Women’s Resources, and its focus is the nurturance and improvement of leadership skills in women leaders who show great promise. Participants are chosen through a competitive application process, and The University of Texas at Austin annually sponsors three individuals. In addition to educating participants on critical issues that are shaping the future of Texas, the program also gives them access to a statewide network of over 2,000 Leadership Texas graduates in fields as diverse as law, journalism, education, medicine and business.

Guzmán has studied racial identity in multiracial individuals and the relationship between academic achievement and ethnic identity in Mexican origin youth. This past year she was named Assistant Vice President for Diversity Education Initiatives in the Division of Diversity and Community Engagement, and in that role is responsible for the implementation and management of diversity education for The University of Texas at Austin. As assistant vice president, she oversees the Multicultural Information Center, the Gender and Sexuality Center and the Diversity Education Institute.
