Dr. Walter Stroup
Dr. Guadalupe Carmona
The National Council for Community and Education Partnerships (NCCEP) has enlisted technology-in-education experts Dr. Walter Stroup and Dr. Guadalupe Carmona to help implement classroom-based math and science initiatives in Mexican schools. Stroup, who is an associate professor, and Carmona, who is an assistant professor, are in the College of Education’s Department of Curriculum and Instruction at The University of Texas at Austin.
The NCCEP has an operating budget of over $300 million in the United States and, under the direction of NCCEP president Dr. Héctor Garza, the organization aims to dramatically expand its programs in Mexico.
NCCEP-Mexico will be facilitating collaboration between businesses, community groups and other organizations to promote high scholastic achievement and college-readiness in students, with a goal of extending state-of-the art learning research and technology design to classrooms. With funding from the National Science Foundation and a partnership with Texas Instruments, Stroup and Carmona will be developing interactive, affordable, next-generation classroom networks. The professors will be working closely with teachers and education administrations to implement research-based approaches to math and science learning in ways that support the national curriculum of Mexico. They also will be participating in two teacher workshops this summer in Monterrey and Ciudad Juárez, Mexico.
