New Educational Psychology Faculty Member Honored with Scholarship Award - August 21, 2007

Dr. Kevin Cokley, an associate professor who is joining the College of Education’s Department of Educational Psychology this fall, has been honored with the Association of Black Psychologists’ (ABPsi) 2007 Scholarship Award.

The ABPsi presents the award to a member who has had a significant number of papers published in scholarly journals and presentations delivered at the association’s annual conventions.

Dr. Cokley was at the University of Missouri at Columbia before coming to The University of Texas at Austin and will be part of the Department of Educational Psychology’s Counseling Program.

His research interests include areas such as the psychosocial and academic development of African American students, Afrocentric psychology and racial and ethnic identity development. Dr. Cokley has authored or co-authored around 30 publications and seven book chapters, and he has delivered over 60 papers and conference presentations on subjects as wide-ranging as the academic motivation of African American college students and the effects of Hurricane Katrina on African Americans.

Dr. Cokley has been associate editor and/or served on the editorial boards of the Journal of Black Psychology, Journal of Counseling Psychology, Journal of Multicultural Counseling and Development, Cultural Diversity and Ethnic Minority Psychology and Measurement and Evaluation in Counseling and Development. He is a member of the Association of Black Psychologists, American Psychological Association and National Council of Black Studies. While at the University of Missouri he received the College of Education High Flyer Award for Teaching Excellence and in 2004 was given the Society for the Psychological Study of Ethnic Minority Issues’ Emerging Scholars Award.
