Dr. Angela Valenzuela
Dr. Angela Valenzuela, an associate professor in the College of Education’s Department of Curriculum and Instruction and Mexican American Studies, has been selected Hispanic Faculty/Staff Association (HFSA) Faculty Member of the Year. Each year one faculty member and one staff member is recognized, and honorees are chosen on the basis of their contributions to the university community and to HFSA, as well as for their outstanding leadership abilities.
Valenzuela, whose research focuses on Latino youth and the education system, recently won the American Educational Research Association’s Outstanding Book Award for her book “Subtractive Schooling: U.S.-Mexican Youth and the Politics of Caring.” She also is involved in a study of Latino youth in inner-city Houston schools and the effects of additive schooling on their learning experiences.
Valenzuela was honored by the HFSA at an awards ceremony on June 14.
