Compact for Reading
Established by legislation, A Compact for Reading is a written agreement among families, teachers, principals, and students to work together to help improve the reading skills of kindergarten through 3 rd grade children. A joint effort of the Education Department, The Corporation for National Service, the American Library Association, Pizza Hut, and the Partnership for Family Involvement in Education, this site offers materials designed to set reading goals and provide some four hundred learning activities. Each of the four grade-specific kits contains 100 activities, organized by reading and literacy skills appropriate to that grade. Get your kids to read and win free pizzas.
Spaghetti Book Club
The Spaghetti Book Club web site is a place for kids who are fond of reading and talking about books. It is the largest site of book reviews written and illustrated by kids for kids. The Spaghetti Book Club was created as a way to support and encourage kids' love for reading. Give kids get an opportunity to connect, on a personal level, with the books they are reading and then share their reactions, thoughts, and opinions with their family members, friends, and kids around the world. This is a good resource for initiating younger kids into the area of story telling and/or story writing.

Secondary Science

Explore Science
Students will have far too much fun at this site to realize how much they are learning. University of Michigan physics instructor Raman Pfaff designed Explore Science, a site that features 34 Macromedia Shockwave interactive learning modules in the areas of mechanics, electricity & magnetism, life science, waves, optics, and astronomy. It has some captivating interactive science sections. Users are challenged to "reverse the field," and attempt to type a simple phrase when the mouse acts in a funny fashion. A two dimensional collision demonstration allows users to change such parameters as mass, initial velocity and table angle. Mr. Pfaff adds a deft and light instructional touch to make all the modules entertaining. Happy exploring!
Whyfiles
This web site looks at the 'science behind the news.' It quells the misconception of science being just a laboratory subject. Offering scientific explanations for day to day happenings, it portrays science as an important human endeavor conducted by ordinary people. Visit this site and explore the whys!
