Cooperating Teacher Materials

APPRENTICE TEACHER SUBSTITUTE POLICY

If an unusual situation arises, apprentice teachers may be permitted to substitute for their cooperating teachers for a few days. This usually occurs after the mid-term point. Permission to substitute for other classroom teachers is granted after the final class day of the semester. Click here for the AISD substitute application and instructions. Pay special attention to the checklist at the end of the application. All materials must be cleared before the application can be processed. After the application is filled out, write in bold red letters "UT Austin Apprentice Teacher", to expedite the application.

In addition, students must attend 1/2 of the full day district substitute orientation. These orientations are held on most Fridays and if possible, should be done BEFORE the semester begins so that no field days are missed. AISD will not allow students to substitute if they have any misdemeanor within five years or any felony conviction at all. Pending charges must be cleared in order to substitute teach. Request for changes should be made in person at the Texas Department of Public Safety.

INTERN SUBSTITUTE POLICY

Interns are generally NOT PERMITTED to substitute. Only students with approval from the Director of Education Services will be permitted to substitute during the semester. While it may be perceived as a valuable teaching opportunity, we have to weigh the risk of things not going well for students who had limited amount of mentor experiences. Students will have the opportunity to do a small amount of substitute teaching around or after the mid-term point of apprentice teaching.

TUBERCULIN SCREENING

Tuberculin screening is required by some districts before students enter the schools.
