Early Childhood - 6th Grade ESL Generalist
The Early Childhood - 6th Grade Generalist ESL Certificate Program (ESL GEN) is designed for students seeking Texas certification to teach in elementary school classrooms. This interdisciplinary major allows students to explore developmental issues of children, learning theory, elementary school content, ESL, and teaching methods; all with a strong component of field experience in public schools.
Students must apply for admission to the Professional Development Sequence (PDS) by March 1 to enter in the Fall or Summer semesters, or by October 1 to enter in the Spring semester. Admission requirements include a completed application by the stated deadlines, presentation of a minimum 2.5 GPA on all coursework taken at UT Austin, completion of prerequisite coursework (M 316K and all major coursework on the degree plan with a minimum grade of "C" or above), and selection by an Admissions Committee. At the time of entrance into the PDS, students may only be lacking up to a maximum of three semester hours of coursework outside the professional development sequence courses.

The first and second year course listings in these documents are to be used as guides to assist you with selecting a schedule, and should be used with the degree plan. These courses can be taken during the fall, spring or summer terms. Twelve to fifteen hours are recommended during the fall and spring semesters. You are also encouraged to consult with your academic advisor before finalizing your schedule each semester.
Students entering UT Fall 2012 should NOT have more than three hours remaining prior to starting the Professional Development Sequence (PDS). Students pursuing the Early Childhood - 6th Grade ESL Generalist Certification major typically begin the PDS at the start of the second semester of the third year.
