Undergraduate Programs
The College of Education at UT Austin offers two different degrees:
- Bachelor of Science (B.S.) in Applied Learning and Development (ALD)
- Bachelor of Science (B.S.) in Kinesiology
Students who are completing the Bachelor of Science in Applied Learning and Development degree program can choose to major in Early Childhood to Fourth Grade Generalist teacher certification, Early Childhood to Fourth Grade Bilingual Generalist teacher certification, All-Level Generic Special Education teacher certification, or the Youth and Community Studies program, a major which does not lead to teacher certification. Note: This last major is currently frozen with no new admissions.
B.S. in Applied Learning and Development
Major: Applied Learning and Development
Major 1: Early Childhood to Fourth Grade Generalist Certification
This program is designed for students who are seeking Texas certification to teach in a pre- kindergarten to fourth grade classrooms.
Major 2: Early Childhood to Fourth Grade Generalist Certification with Bilingual Education
This program leads to certification to teach in pre-kindergarten to fourth grade classrooms, and an additional certificate to teach in pre-kindergarten to fourth grade bilingual classrooms.
Major 3: All-Level Generic Special Education
This program leads to certification to teach in pre-kindergarten to twelfth grade special education classrooms.
Major 4: Youth and Community Studies
This program is designed for students who are preparing to work with children in a variety of settings and who do not wish to pursue teaching certification. This program does not culminate in a teaching certificate.
B.S. in Kinesiology
Students who are completing a Bachelor of Science in Kinesiology degree program can choose from majors in general kinesiology (with an option for all-level [pre-K-twelfth grade] teacher certification), athletic training, health promotion and fitness, and sport management.
Major: Kinesiology
This program is designed for students who are interested in the study of human movement, including those interested in physical therapy, medicine, biomedical research, rehabilitation, or graduate study in kinesiology.
Major: Kinesiology: All-Level Teacher Certification
This program is the same as the one above but includes additional requirements for Texas certification in teaching physical education at both the elementary and secondary levels. This program enables one to teach at the pre-kindergarten to twelfth grade level.
Major: Athletic Training
This program is designed for students who are interested in becoming certified athletic trainers and working in sports medicine. Other settings and career options include working in professional, college, and high school athletics, sports medicine and rehabilitation clinics, or corporate health care programs. The program also prepares students interested in pursuing graduate programs in physical therapy, occupational therapy, medicine, and other allied health programs.
Major: Health Promotion and Fitness
This program is designed for students who are preparing for careers in the health and fitness area, including corporate fitness, wellness and health promotion, rehabilitation, health clubs, and patient education programs.
Major: Sport Management
This program is designed for students who are interested in careers in the management of sport programs in educational or private/corporate settings.
