Athletic Training

The Athletic Training Program (ATP) prepares students for a career as an athletic trainer, an allied health care professional that specializes in the prevention, assessment, treatment, and rehabilitation of injuries and illnesses to athletes and those engaged in physical activity. This major is also appropriate for students interested in continuing their education in general medicine, sports medicine, physical therapy, occupational therapy, or other allied health care professions. Students interested in Athletic Training must complete specific prerequisites and a separate application for admission to the major. This major is highly competitive with an enrollment limit of 60 students. The Athletic Training Program is accredited by (CAATE).

Program prerequisites:

All students who are interested in the Athletic Training major must complete the Directed Observation Program, as well as the following courses in order to be eligible to apply to the program.

  • KIN 219K: Introduction to Athletic Training (offered in Spring only)
  • KIN 312: Care and Prevention of Athletic Injury
  • KIN 324K: Applied Human Anatomy
  • CC 306M: Introduction to Medical and Scientific Terminology

In order to participate in the Directed Observation Program as required in the prerequisites, students must attend one of the following meetings:

September 2, 2015 7:00 am in BEL 404
October 7, 2015 7:00 am in BEL 404
November 4, 2015 7:00 am in BEL 404
January 20, 2016 7:00 am in BEL 404

*January 20th is the last Direct Observation (DO) meeting of the year. Completion of the prerequisites does not guarantee acceptance to the program.

The first and second year course listings in these documents are to be used as guides to assist you with selecting a schedule, and should be used with the degree plan. These courses can be taken during the fall, spring or summer terms. Twelve to fifteen hours are recommended during the fall and spring semesters.
