Beginning Tennis - This course is designed to introduce the students to the basic skills and knowledge required to participate in tennis. Emphasis will be placed on the fundamentals of the forehand, backhand, serve and volley. Progressive drill swill be taught to facilitate the learning of the above skills. Rules, scoring, and basic stragegy will be covered to enable sutdents to participate in singles and doubles competition.
Advanced Beginning Tennis - This course is designed for the student who has been exposed to the basic fundamentals of tennis and can play a recreational game of singles and doubles. Emphasis in the advanced beginning class will be placed on improving hte studetns overall stroke consistency and learning to utilize various spins. Greater emphasis will be placed upon improving the backhand groundstroke and developing a spin serve. Additional stroke techniques will be covered.
Intermediate/Advanced Intermediate Tennis - Students enrolling in this course should be able to consistently hit the basic strokes (serve, forehand, backhand, volley, lob, overhead, and return serve) with accuracy, and limited power. An NTRP rating of at least 3.5 is required. This course is designed to develop skills needed to compete at the intermediate level (NTRP 3.5-4.5) and the advanced intermediate level (NTRP 4.5-5.5). Emphasis will be placed on improving sutdent's net skills along with the five tactical phases of tennis (First Strike, Point Building, Capitalize and Attack, Finishing, and Defense) to enable students to master an all-court game (combinign baseline play with net play effectively). Application of tactics will be incorporated in singels and doubles drills and competitive play.
Basic Core Tennis - This course is designed to help physical education students learn more about tennis and how it is taught. the course will enable the students to learn how to the hit basic strokes in tennis (forehand, backhand, serve, volley, return of serve, lob and overhead) while understanding what goes into producing efficient strokes. The biomechanical principles of the basic strokes and how to teach them progressionally will be emphasized. Time will be spent learning how to properly demonstrate and execute each stroke. Teaching methods will be presented to give students ideas of how to organize and teach basic tennis skills. In addition outside teaching/playing/watching opportunities will be available to provide the students additional tennis related experiences that will enhance the learning process.
