Masters Degree Requirements
Specific requirements for each Master’s Degree program are outlined below. All organized graduate courses (i.e., not including Directed Research) taken in Exercise Science must be taken for a letter grade. Courses taken outside of Exercise Science may be taken on a credit / no credit basis (with adviser approval), as allowed by the Graduate School (i.e., no more than 6 credit hours, or 20% of the hours on the Program of Work).
Master of Science (M.S.) with Thesis (minimum 30 hrs)
- KIN 382 Lab Techniques (choose 1 of 2 options) 3 hrs
Either Laboratory Techniques in Exercise Physiology or Biomechanics Laboratory Techniques - KIN 386 Research Methods (choose 1 of 2 options) 3 hrs
Either "Proposal Writing" or "Grant Writing" (upper division masters students only) - At least one adviser-approved graduate statistics course (see list) 3 hrs
- KIN 698A & 698B - Thesis 6 hrs
- 15 hrs of adviser-approved coursework, of which:
- At least 9 hrs must be organized courses in Exercise Science
- No more than 6 hrs of these 15 hrs may be taken outside the department.
Masters of Science (M.S.) with Report (minimum 33 hrs)
- KIN 382 Lab Techniques (choose 1 of 2 options) 3 hrs
Either Laboratory Techniques in Exercise Physiology or Biomechanics Laboratory Techniques - One adviser-approved graduate statistics course (see list) 3 hrs
- KIN 396T Directed Research & KIN 398R Report 6 hrs
- 21 hrs of adviser-approved coursework, of which:
- At least 12 hrs must be organized courses in Exercise Science
- No more than 6 hrs of these 21 hrs may be taken outside the department.
Master of Education (M.Ed.) without Thesis or Report (minimum 36 hrs)
- KIN 382 Lab Techniques (choose 1 of 2 options) 3 hrs
Either Laboratory Techniques in Exercise Physiology or Biomechanics Laboratory Techniques - One adviser-approved graduate statistics or research methods course (see list) 3 hrs
- 30 additional hrs of adviser-approved coursework, of which:
- At least 15 hrs must be organized courses in Exercise Science
- No more than 9 hrs of "Independent Study" (e.g., KIN 396T or 397), "Internship" (e.g., KIN 397P), or Culminating Experience can be counted towards these 30 additional hours.
- No more than 6 hrs of these 30 hrs may be taken outside the department.
