Frequently Asked Questions
- Is there coaching certification in Texas?
- No. All coaches must be certified teachers and full time employees of the school district, but the field of certification is not specified and there is no separate coaching certification. The kinesiology major with teaching certification however, provides excellent preparation for those interested in coaching. At UT Austin we have developed a coaching specialization (core of courses) recommended for our own coaching endorsement that meet (and surpass) the national coaching certification standards.
- If I teach in an elementary school would it still be possible for me to coach?
- Yes. Several of our graduates have taken positions teaching in the elementary school and coaching at a middle or high school.
- If I get certified in Texas will I be able to teach in other states?
- Some states accept certification from Texas with no additional requirements. Others require some specific additions. For example, those entering Texas with certification from other states can get a one year certificate during which time they are required to take the appropriate teacher certification exam(s).
- If I graduate with teacher certification will I be able to get a job?
- Our graduates have enjoyed a high success rate in obtaining employment. Virtually every certification graduate who has wanted to teach has obtained employment. Those who have prepared themselves for high demand second teaching fields such as math or science and those willing to leave metropolitan districts several choices of positions. We regularly get requests for teacher even around Austin that we are unable to fill. More teachers are needed!
