After a budding career in intercollegiate athletics I decided that I wanted to return to school to complete my PhD in Sport Management. While my background was in communications and I was interested in the crossroads between working in athletics and maintaining a quality family life, my interests shifted with the birth of my son.
My current research lies at the intersection of youth sport and the family. Youth sport seems to be heading down a path right now in the U.S. that I am not sure is the best path to take. Far greater emphasis on skill development and winning is being placed on both the participants and the coaches. What I am currently researching is what impact does a system like this place on all members of the family. In addition to how all members are affected, I am looking into how the family system as a whole is impacted.
Ultimately I would like to help ensure that the youth sport product that is out there for families is one that will benefit all members of the family. I had a really positive experience with youth sport as a child and want the same for my children. I can be contacted at newhousebailey@utexas.edu and would love any feedback or comments.
