FAQs

1. Should I get elementary classroom certification with a kinesiology specialization or all-level physical education certification if I want to teach elementary physical education.

It depends on your interest. The kinesiology major with all-level certification is a much more complete course of study for those interested in becoming proficient in a wide range of physical activities for teaching, understanding the human body, its response to exercise and studying the place of physical education and sport in our society. This certification also provides the option of teaching in middle and high schools.

The classroom certification with kinesiology certification is better for those whose primary interest is in elementary school aged children and would like classroom teaching as a second career choice rather than physical education at another level as a second choice. Both certifications allow graduates to obtain employment as elementary school physical education specialists.

2. Is there coaching certification in Texas?

No. All coaches must be certified teachers and full time employees of the school district, but the field of certification is not specified and there is no separate coaching certification. The kinesiology major with teaching certification however, provides excellent preparation for those interested in coaching. At UT Austin we have developed a core of courses recommended for our own coaching endorsement that meet (and surpass) the national coaching certification standards.

3. If I teach in an elementary school would it still be possible for me to coach?

Yes. Several of our graduates have taken positions teaching in the elementary school and coaching at a middle or high school.

4. If I get certified in Texas will I be able to teach in other states?

Some states accept certification from Texas with no additional requirements. Others require some specific additions. For example, those entering Texas with certification from other states can get a one year provisional certificate during which time they are required to take the Texas Excet Test for certification.

5. If I graduate with teacher certification will I be able to get a job?

Our graduates have enjoyed a high success rate in obtaining employment. Virtually every certification graduate who has wanted to teach has obtained employment. Those who have chosen high demand second teaching fields and those willing to leave metropolitan districts several choices of positions. We regularly get requests for teacher even around Austin that we are unable to fill. More teachers are needed!
