Major Course of Study

Requirements for the Major in Kinesiology-General Program 

  1. Completion of the basic education requirements for the Bachelor of Science in Kinesiology.
  2. Completion of a 32-hour major consisting of: 
    1. In addition, the student must complete six semester hours in courses certified as having a substantial writing component. These courses are identified in the Course Schedule. At least three of these six semester hours must be at the upper-division level. (Teacher Certification majors must take only one three-hour writing component course.)
    2. Kinesiology 321M, 324K, 325K, 326K and 335 or 336.
    3. Three semester hours of coursework in psychosocial foundations chosen from Kinesiology 330, 333, 352K (Topic: Psychosocial Issues in Adult Development and Health ), 352K (Topic: Psychological Aspects of Exercise), 352K (Topic: Physical Aging in America), 352K (Topic: Sociological Aspects of Sport and Physical Activity), 352K (Topic: Psychosocial Issues in Women's Health), 366, 370K (Topic: Social and Cultural Foundations of Health), and 375.
    4. Twelve additional semester hours in Kinesiology, six of which must be upper-division. No more than six semester hours may be selected from Kinesiology 127L, 227L, 327L, and 627L
  3. Completion of a Minor: Eighteen semester hours, nine of which are upper-division, in one subject outside the major approved by the undergraduate adviser. No more than six semester hours may be counted toward the minor and toward the basic education requirements.

Requirements for the Major in Kinesiology with All-Level Teaching Certification  

For the all-level teacher certification, students must complete:

  1. Basic Education Requirements for the Bachelor of Science in Kinesiology, with the following modifications:
    1. Documented evidence of proficiency in computer applications.
    2. Six semester hours in Applied Learning and Development, consisting of:
      1. One of the following courses: Educational Psychology 332 or 363M (Topic 3: Adolescent Development), Human Development and Family Sciences 313/113L or Psychology 304 or 309.
      2. Applied Learning and Development 322 or Psychology 345.
  2. Completion of a 38-hour major consisting of:
    1. Two semester hours of coursework chosen from core topics of Kinesiology 119.
    2. Demonstration of proficiency in seven areas of human movement: ballroom dance, basketball, conditioning, gymnastics, swimming, tennis, and volleyball. Two of these areas are covered by the required Kinesiology 119 core courses, but students must demonstrate proficiency in all five additional areas. Proficiency in each area may be demonstrated by passing skill tests written tests or by earning a collegiate letter; information about the skill and written tests is available from the Department of Kinesiology and Health Education. Students unable to demonstrate such proficiency must complete a basic core topic of Kinesiology 119 in each area of deficiency.
    3. Kinesiology 119 (Topic 11: Creative Rhythms), 119 (Topic: Developmental Gymnastics), 119 (Topic: Manipulative Skills), 219D, 219S, 219T, 321M, 324K, 325K, 326K, 335 or 336, 360, 375.and 376
  3. Completion of an 18-hour professional development sequence consisting of EDC 331C, EDC 332S, EDC 364 or EDC 371 and EDC 667S.

Admission to the professional development sequence is restricted to those students who have: a) met the proper academic requirements and b) applied for admission to the sequence. For details on this process see an academic advisor in the Dean's office.

Requirements for the Major in Kinesiology-Health Promotion and Fitness 

  1. Completion of the basic education requirements for the Bachelor of Science in Kinesiology. The student must also provide evidence of proficiency in computing. He or she may demonstrate this proficiency by completing three hours of coursework in computer sciences, management information systems, or computer literacy as part of the work taken to fulfill the Area C requirement.
  2. Completion of a 42-hour major consisting of: 
    1. Kinesiology 324K, 325K, 352K (Topic 4: Management of Sport and Health Promotion Programs), 352K (Topic: Diagnosis and Evaluation of Fitness), 373, and 377.
    2. Nine semester hours of coursework in Kinesiology approved by the undergraduate advisor. Kinesiology 119, 127L, 227L, 327L, and 627L may not be used to fulfill this requirement.
    3. A sequence of professional development courses within the major, consisting of Kinesiology 352K (Topic: Techniques of Fitness Leadership; 352K (Topic: Techniques of Health Promotion); 327L (Fieldwork: Personal Training); 327L (Fieldwork: Clinical Exercise Testing) and KIN 627L: Fieldwork in Health Promotion
  3. Completion of a 15-hour Minor including: 
    1. Nutrition 311 and,
    2. Twelve semester hours in an approved subject; six hours must be upper-division. No more than three semester hours may be counted both toward the minor and toward the basic education requirements.
  4. Completion of additional Elective courses to bring the total to 130 semester hours. No more than twelve semester hours in Kinesiology 127L, 227L, 327L, and 627L may be counted toward the degree.

Requirements for the Major in Sport Management 

Students wishing to major in Sport Management must apply for admission to the program. For details on admission requirements, please see an academic advisor.

  1. Completion of the 27-hour Sport Management major consisting of: KIN 312, KIN 329, KIN 352K (Sport Law), KIN 352K (Management of Sport and Health Promotions Programs), KIN 352K (Revenue and Budgeting in Sport), KIN 352K (Sport and Event Promotion), KIN 352K (Media and Public Relations in Sport), and an additional six hours of KIN classes.
  2. Prescribed work in a minor: Eighteen semester hours, nine of which must be upper-division, in subject area outside the major that is approved by an academic adviser. No more than six hours may be counted toward both the minor and the basic education requirements.
  3. Prescribed work in professional development: Eighteen semester hours of upper-division coursework in education approved by an academic adviser in the dean's office. Registration in the professional development sequence is restricted to those who have received approval for this major from an academic adviser. To enroll in the professional development fieldwork or internship, students must have: a) met the proper academic requirements, and b) applied for permission to enroll in the courses. For details on this process, please see an academic advisor. Please note: Sport Management students must meet with their faculty advisor and set up contracts for KIN 327L and 627L in the semester before they plan to take the course.
  4. Electives: Electives may be needed to bring the total number of hours to 130.

Requirements for the Major in Athletic Training 

Students who plan to major in Athletic Training must be admitted to the Athletic Training Education Program (ATEP). Admission to the program is based on a competitive admissions process. The student's grade point average and completion of prescribed coursework are factors in the admission decision. Applicants must also participate in the Directed Observation Program, meet a set of technical standards, pass a health assessment/physical examination, provide proof of immunizations and vaccinations, submit letters of recommendation, and submit additional application documents. In addition to completing the coursework associated with the athletic training major, students in the ATEP must participate in a series of clinical assignments and become adept in a set of educaional competencies and clinical proficiencies. Students who plan to take the Board of Certification (BOC) examination or the state licensure examination of athletic trainers must complete the ATEP. 

  1. Completion of the basic education requirements for the Bachelor of Science in Kinesiology.
  2. Completion of a 45-hour major consisting of:
    1. KIN 119 (topic 10) Conditioning, KIN 219K (topic 3) Introduction to Athletic Training, KIN 312 (topic 2) Care and Prevention of Athletic Injuries, KIN 324K, KIN 325K, KIN 326K, KIN 352K (topic 13) Sports Nutrition, KIN 352K (topic 19) Therapeutic Modalities in Athletic Training, KIN 352K (topic 20) Topics in Athletic Training, KIN 352K (topic 21) Athletic Training Program Administration, KIN 352K (topic 22) Clinical Evaluation of Athletic Injuries in the Lower Body, KIN 352K (topic 15) Clinical Evaluation of Athletic Injuries in the Upper Body, KIN 352K (topic 24) Advanced Athletic Training: Therapeutic Exercise and Rehabilitation, and an additional 9 hours of Kinesiology courses.
    2. Students participating in the ATEP must complete a fieldwork course (KIN 127L, 227L, 327L, or the equivalent) in each semester of the clinical rotation. Up to six hours of this fieldwork may be counted toward the degree as electives
  3. Completion of a 15-hour Minor: 
    1. in a subject outside of the major that is approved by an academic advisor.
    2. 9 semester hours must be upper division.
    3. No more than six hours may be counted toward both the minor and the basic education requirement.
  4. Completion of electives as needed to bring the total number of hours to 130.
