FAQs

If a class is closed, and I am required to take it, what do I do?

Advisors are not able to add you to a closed course without the professor’s permission. If the class has a waitlist option, be sure you add yourself to the waitlist. If there is no waitlist, then you must wait until the add/drop period to see if any seats open up. If no seats are available, then you should attend the first day of class and ask the professor if they will let you add their class.

How do I get into Sport Management?

Sport Management is a 'restricted' major in the College of Education.  This means that students are not directly admitted into the program as freshman or new transfer students.  An interested student will enter UT as a Kinesiology Pre-Sport Management major and must complete approximately 27 hours of prerequisite classes before they are allowed to apply for Sport Management.  Students may  transfer in some prerequisites, but there are a few that must be taken at UT.  Once the prerequisite classes are completed, interested students submit an application and resume for consideration into the program.  Although the minimum GPA requirement is a 2.5 for consideration for the major, the majority of the applicants that are admitted into the major have above a 3.0 overall GPA. The number of students accepted to the Sport Management major depends on the available openings and will vary each semester.

How do I become an Athletic Training major?

The Athletic Training Education Program (ATEP) is a ‘restricted’ major in the College of Education.  This means that students are not directly admitted into the program as freshman or new transfer students.  An interested student will enter UT as a Kinesiology Pre-Athletic Training major and must complete the required prerequisite classes and Direct Observation hours before they are allowed to apply for Athletic Training.  Students are selected once per year in the spring / summer for fall semester admission to the ATEP / Athletic Training major. A maximum of 60 students can be enrolled in the ATEP / Athletic Training major. The number of students accepted to the ATEP depends on the available openings and may vary each year.

For more details on this major, please visit the ATEP website:

I am interested in transferring to the KIN department. What do I do?

Due to the amount of students that are enrolled in our department, transfer requirements have changed. If you have more than 36 attempted hours (UT and transfer hrs included) you are required to have no less than a 3.0 overall UT GPA. If you have less than 36 attempted hours (UT and transfer hrs included) you are required to have a minimum of a 2.0 overall UT GPA. Call BEL 1005 (512-475-6146) to check on dates for upcoming transfer sessions, as well as a possible time to set up an advising appointment.

I am not in the College of Education, but I am interested in taking a KIN course. It is open but restricted and says I need departmental approval. What do I do?

You need to have professor’s permission to add the course. The professor’s first priority is to add all of the KIN majors first. If seats are still available, then it is up to the professor to decide if they will add you to their class.

** If the class is a Sport Management or Athletic Training course, non-majors are less likely to be added to these classes due to prerequisite requirements and/or enrollment limits.

How can I find out if a class at another institution will transfer to UT?

If the institution is in the state of Texas, you can check class transfer information by going to: http://www.utexas.edu/student/admissions/ate/

If the institution is not in the state of Texas, current and former UT Austin students may request advance transfer credit evaluations for out-of-state courses by printing and submitting a pre-Evaluation form that can be downloaded from the site listed above.

When and how do I apply for graduation?

You will apply for graduation during your last semester at UT.  You will use the following link to apply: https://utdirect.utexas.edu:443/coe/index.WBX

The application must be submitted by the mid-semester deadline. For further questions regarding graduation please contact BEL 1005 or SZB 216.

What is a degree audit and can I do one on my own?

A degree audit will list all of the courses that you have taken at UT, as well as those that have been transferred from other institutions. The audit will tell you where the classes are counting in your degree plan and what you are lacking from the degree in order to graduate. You can create your own degree audit by going to https://utdirect.utexas.edu/nrida/menu.WBX while you are logged into UTDirect. A degree audit is also useful if you want to look up other degrees that you may be interested in completing. If there appears to be an error, or if you are having difficulty understanding your audit, please make an appointment to see your advisor.

KIN 327L = minimum of 8 hours per week

*** Some Fieldwork topics require prerequisites ***

How do I minor in Kinesiology?

At this time, our major is at capacity.  All of the seats in our classes are taken up by our own students, which makes it very difficult to minor in Kinesiology at this time.  Since most of our classes are restricted to current majors, it is unlikely that you will be able to register for classes to complete the hours required for a minor.

How do I register?

Registration is done online through a program called ROSE.  Please refer to the following link for registration instructions:

http://www.utexas.edu/student/registrar/registration/

Which courses can I take pass/fail?

Only electives may be taken pass/fail. Electives are considered to be anything that is not required on your degree plan.  These are the courses that you are taking only to meet the 130-hour requirement. A maximum of five elective courses may be taken on a pass/fail basis.

What if I accidentally took one of my core classes pass/fail?

You will have to repeat the course in order to meet your degree requirement.

If I get a “D” in a KIN class, does it still count?

A “D”, although not recommended, is accepted in three out of five of our majors. Athletic Training and All-Level Teacher Certification require a “C” or better in all KIN classes.

How do I find out who my faculty advisor is?

Only Health Promotion & Fitness and Sport Management majors are assign Faculty Advisors.  There is a notebook in BEL 1005 (512.475.6146) and BEL 222 (512.471.1273) with this information. You can either call or visit these offices to find the name of your Advisor.

What classes count as a substantial writing component?

When you look on the course schedule, you can distinguish a writing component by checking the course description and the title of the course.  The course description must include “CONTAINS A SUBSTANTIAL WRITING COMPONENT AND FULFILLS PART OF THE BASIC EDUCATION REQUIREMENT IN WRITING”. The title will also have a “-W” at the end. For example:

HED 352K 2-PSYCHSOCL ISS WOMEN’S HLTH – W

What is the maximum amount of hours per semester I can take at UT?

You are allowed to take up to seventeen semester hours for each fall and spring semester. During the summer session, you are allowed to take a maximum of fourteen hours, with no more than eight semester hours in a six-week term. An Academic Advisor must approve anything above these limits.

Can I be enrolled in both ACC and UT at the same time?

The College of Education allows concurrent enrollment during the long semester as long as a student is in good standing at the University of Texas at Austin. Students may also concurrently enroll at A.C.C. during a summer session.

How many hours can I transfer from a community college?

Generally, you will run out of transferable courses available at the community college before you reach a limit on transfer hours. In order to graduate from the University of Texas at Austin, students under the 2004-2006 catalog and later must complete a minimum of sixty semester hours in residence. Additionally, students may only transfer in six out of the last thirty hours counting towards their degree.
