Mission Statement
The mission of the Exercise and Sport Psychology program is to generate, apply and disseminate knowledge in the fields of exercise, sport and health psychology and to train students to do the same.
Program Description
Exercise and Sport Psychology
A Masters degree specialization in Exercise and Sport Psychology (M.A. with Thesis or M.Ed. without thesis) is offered within Kinesiology. This is primarily designed as a research degree for those students who are interested in the psychological aspects of physical activity. See the lab web page for detailed information ongoing projects. This degree provides an opportunity for additional course work and research centered on either health and exercise (exercise and mental health, mind-body health, exercise and preventative medicine, etc.) or sport (social psychology of sport, motivation and emotion, sport nutrition, etc.).
Behavioral Health
A Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) specialization in Behavioral Health is offered within Health Education. This is primarily designed as an interdisciplinary research degree for those students who are interested in the psychological processes of health that occur across the lifespan. Required course work is drawn from the Department of Psychology, Health Education and Kinesiology. Those students who work with Dr. Bartholomew should have a primary interest in exercise and its role in health psychology. As a result, these students will be asked to complete additional course work in Exercise Science, with a particular emphasis in exercise physiology.
By utilizing resources from across campus, the interdisciplinary approach exposes students to research perspectives outside of Exercise Science. We feel that this is the ideal method to prepare students to excel throughout their careers within the evolving area of health and exercise psychology.
