Departmental Fellowships/Scholarships

All scholarship/fellowship applicants must complete the University Continuing Fellowship application and submit to Graduate Advisor's office, Bellmont 710.

Dr. C.J. (Shorty) & Dr. Mary Buice Alderson Graduate Recruitment Fellowship

This scholarship may be used by any area in the Department of Kinesiology and Health Education in the recruitment of students to the graduate program.

Selection for the Graduate Recuitment Scholarship will be made by the Subvention Fund Committee.

Students selected to receive this scholarship shall meet the following criteria:

  1. Recipient must be a graduate student accepted into the Depatment of Kinesiology and Health Education.
  2. Recipient must show evidence of a professional attitude and professional involvement.
  3. Excellence in scholarship shall be a consideration but not a determinant in selection of recipients.

Application Deadline: March 1

Stipend: $1,500

Dr. C.J. (Shorty) & Dr. Mary Buice Alderson Graduate Scholarships for Teaching Excellence

The Graduate Scholarships for Teaching Excellence are used to reward outstanding teaching by graduate students.

  1. Students must have held a teaching assistantshp for at least one year and be currently appointed as a teaching assistant for the academic year in the Department of Kinesiology and Health Education.
  2. Must show evidence of a professional attitude and professional involvement.

Application Deadline: March 1

Stipend: $1,000

Lynn McCraw Endowed Presidental Fellowship

To provide support to an outstanding graduate student within the Department of Kinesiology and Health Education.

  1. To be awarded to a student who is undertaking a dissertation or thesis to support his/her research to fulfill requirements for the degree.
  2. The supervising professor must nominate students with a supporting letter that provides evidence of the quality of research and ability of the student to complete the project.
  3. Applicant must submit a synopsis of his/her proposed research. The synopsis must demonstrate a well-thought out problem and hypothesis as well as appropriate methodology to address the research question.
  4. Recipient will present a seminar to the Department.

Application Deadline: April 15

Stipend: Variable

Professor and Mrs. Karl K. Klein Endowed Graduate Scholarship - $1,000

Recipient must be enrolled in Health Education and/or Health Promotion and Fitness and show promise of contribution to his/her field. Applicant must be recommended by the appropriate departmental chairman.

University PreEmptive Fellowships

These fellowships are prestigious awards offered by the Graduate School to attract top quality graduate students to The University of Texas at Austin. Graduate Advisers have the vital role of identifying and nominating eligible applicants. Applicants who satisfy certain criteria may be offered fellowship support immediately without waiting for a committee decision. These fellowships are not available to students who are currently or were previously enrolled in the Graduate School at UT Austin; however, UT Austin undergraduates who meet the criteria are eligible.

Eligibility: Students not currently or previously enrolled in the Graduate School at UT. Candidates must rank within the top 10% of all students in their discipline. Any discipline.

Application Deadline: Check with the department to which you are applying or refer to the Graduate Admission Bulletin for specific deadlines.

Stipend: Variable, depending on program. In the case of fellowships of $10,000 or more, the Fellow receives in addition a $500 supplement for medical insurance.

Generally 80-90 awards are made annually.

University Continuing Fellowships

These awards are made to students who are currently enrolled in a UT graduate program. Graduate Advisers submit nominations to the Graduate School. Faculty review committees which evaluate the applications emphasize accomplishments since entering Graduate School.

Eligibility: Currently enrolled at UT. Awards are based on major accomplishments since entering Graduate School, a well defined program of research, strong personal statement, and letters of recommendation. Financial need will be considered. Any discipline.

Application Deadline: March 1

Stipend: Variable. In the case of fellowships of $10,000 or more, the Fellow receives in addition of $500 supplement for medical insurance.

University Tuition Fellowship

These awards are made to students who are currently enrolled in a UT graduate program. Students nominated for the Continuing Fellowships will be considered for this award.

Eligibility: Currently enrolled at UT. Awards are based on major accomplishments since entering Graduate School, a well defined program of research, strong personal statement, and letters of recommendation. Financial need will be considered. Any discipline.

Application Deadline: March 1.

Stipend: Variable. This award entitles a student to pay tuition and fees at in-state rates.

David Bruton, Jr. Graduate Fellowship

The Bruton Student Endowment Fellowships were established by The University of Texas System Board of Regents for the benefit of The University of Texas at Austin in September, 1991. Students nominated for the Continuing Fellowships will be considered for this award.

Eligibility: Students from any field are eligible. The students may be entering or continuing, and they may be candidates for the master's or the doctoral degree.

Two groups of students are eligible to be considered for Bruton Fellowships:

  1. Students who have been awarded nationally competitive graduate fellowships.
  2. Students nominated for Continuing Fellowships. Awards are based on major accomplishments since entering Graduate School, a well-defined program of research, strong personal statement, and letters of recommendation.

Stipend: $1,000

A.D. Hutchison Student Endowment Fellowships

The A.D. Hutchison Student Endowment Fund was established by The University of Texas System Board of Regents for the benefit of The University of Texas at Austin on August 13, 1992. Students nominated for the Continuing Fellowship will be considered for this award.

Eligibility: Currently enrolled at UT. Recipients may be of any academic major. Awards are based on major accomplishments since entering Graduate School, a well defined program of research, a strong personal statement, and letters of recommendation.

Application Deadline: March 1

Stipend: Variable. In the case of fellowships of $10,000 or more, the Fellow receives in addition a $500 supplement for medical insurance and $1,000 per long semester towards tuition and fees.

William S. Livingston Graduate Fellowship

The Livingston Fellowship program was established in January 1995, in honor of William S. Livingston, Professor of Government and longtime vice-President and Dean of Graduate Studies at The University of Texas at Austin. The program is intended to provide recognition and financial support to outstanding graduate students at The University. Students nominated for the Continuing Fellowship will be considered for this award.

Eligibility: Livingston Fellowships will be awarded to graduate students in residence at The University. There is no restriction on the fields of study. Awards are based on major accomplishments since entering Graduate School, a well defined program of research, strong personal statement, and letters of recommendation. Any discipline.

Application Deadline: March 1

Stipend: Variable. In the case of fellowships of $10,000 or more, the Fellow receives in addition a $500 supplement for medical insurance and $1,000 per long semester towards tuition and fees.

Application Deadlines:

Fall - Priority Deadline - February 1. Applications will continue to be reviewed for possible admission until August 1.

Spring: October 1

Summer: May 1

Professional Development (Travel) Award

Provide partial support for students to attend major professional meetings at which they present original papers abased on their research. The awards cover transportation costs to and from the meeting, as well as partial per diem expenses (up to three days, at $30.00 per day).
