Practicum Training

A major objective of the School Psychology master's specialization is to prepare students to serve the educational, health, and psychological health needs of children, adolescents and families in school settings. One emphasis is assessment: Students gain skills in educational, cognitive, behavioral, and social-emotional assessment. A second emphasis is therapy: Students gain experience providing broad mental health interventions with children and training from a cognitive-behavioral perspective.

The objectives for Practicum Training are as follows:

  1. Prepare students to be self-aware, reflective practitioners, able to effectively monitor their beliefs and personal experiences as applied to professional practice.
  2. Prepare students to provide developmentally and culturally sensitive, ecologically valid, and integrated educational and psychological interventions, primarily in schools.
  3. Prepare students to identify the early signs of educational, psychological, and behavioral health difficulties to prevent negative developmental outcomes.
  4. Prepare students to promote capacity building in educators and caregivers so they can promote healthy development and educational attainment in youths and families
