SP Admissions
The doctoral School Psychology Program is highly competitive: The program typically receives 60+ applications each year and invites approximately 25 students to interview for an entering class of 8 students. Students are notified that they are being invited for an interview in late December to early January. Interviews are held on a single day on the UT campus (usually a Friday) during late January or early February. While visiting during interview day is strongly encouraged, telephone or Skype interviews are available for students unable to travel to UT. Students are usually notified of their admission decision within two weeks of the scheduled interview date.
Admission decisions are made by consensus of the school psychology faculty. Selection of students is based on multiple factors including GRE scores, course grades, letters of recommendation, potential match between student and faculty interests, and a personal statement. In our review, we look for evidence of a good fit between the applicant and the program. The Graduate School does not impose a minimum GRE or GPA for admission. However, students with a low GPA or low GRE scores need to show outstanding performance in other areas in order to be given serious consideration. For the entering class of 2009, the average GPA was 3.63, and the GRE averages were 592 for Verbal and 659 on the Quantitative section. Note that the metric for scoring of the GRE is changing Fall 2011.
