Choice of an appropriate graduate school is indeed an important decision for you, and the program you choose should be one that will meet your unique goals. Your choice may also be influenced by admission requirements, as well as opportunities for financial assistance, and, in this regard, the following information may be helpful to you.
Doctoral students in the Department of Educational Psychology at The University of Texas at Austin are permitted to begin their studies in the fall semester only. Thus, applications for admission to doctoral study are accepted only for the fall semester and only for full-time enrollment (a minimum of nine semester graduate hours).
Admission requirements for the master's specializations are more flexible. Enrollment may begin with the fall or summer semesters, and part-time status is permitted.
The number of students accepted into our graduate program each year reflects the limits of our academic training resources. Since interest in the study and profession of psychology continues to grow, competition for admission is keen. In reviewing applications for admission, our faculty considers all sources of information: previous academic preparation, Graduate Record Examination score, grade-point average, recommendations, and evidence that an applicant's background, interests, and goals are compatible with those of the area of specialization to which he or she is applying. Previous academic preparation should include at least 12 hours of coursework in the social sciences or education, including courses in statistics and measurement. If lacking adequate background, newly admitted students may be required to complete prerequisites.
The Department of Educational Psychology seeks a diverse student body that is academically well-prepared for graduate school, committed to the development of new knowledge, and interested in improving professional practice. Indicative of the credentials of successful applicants to our doctoral program, the average GRE score in recent years for admitted students has been approximately 1250 (verbal and quantitative sections only). Based on upper-division level undergraduate work and prior graduate work (if applicable), the grade-point average of doctoral applicants approved for admission has been approximately 3.7 (out of 4.0). The average GRE score for admitted master’s students has been approximately 1150, with a grade-point average of approximately 3.5.
The Department's sources of financial support are limited. Approximately 20% of our students receive financial assistance through the Department in any one year. Thus, financial assistance through the Department, particularly to incoming students, cannot be assured. Nonetheless, a significant number of our students beyond their first year are able to secure financial support in the form of part-time employment (on-campus and off) through resources of The University, the Office of Financial Services, the Department, or other sources. Should you decide to apply for admission to our graduate program, your application will receive careful consideration. You are strongly encouraged to begin the application process as soon as possible. Once the Department and Graduate Admissions have received all necessary materials, your completed application file will be referred to the appropriate faculty admissions committee for review. This review process will usually take a minimum of several weeks. As soon as the committee has taken action, the Department will promptly e-mail you a notice of the recommendation we have made to the Graduate School. Soon afterwards, you will receive official notification from the Graduate School.
