Admission Requirements

Graduate and International Admissions Center Requirements

You must apply online with the Graduate and International Admissions Center (GIAC).

The following must be completed or submitted:

  1. Complete the online ApplyTexas application - This is the fastest, easiest way for you to submit your application and is GIAC's preferred method for receiving applications.
  2. Pay your non-refundable application fee.
  3. Submit official transcripts to GIAC. Transcripts of all attempted undergraduate work should be sent directly from the registrar of each college and university attended to GIAC. Photocopies or transcripts submitted directly by the applicant are not acceptable.
  4. Submit an official GRE test score to GIAC. These scores must be sent directly from the Educational Testing Service (ETS) to GIAC. Photocopies are not acceptable. GRE scores older than 5 years are not valid. Please visit the Educational Testing Service (ETS) site for more information on taking the GRE.
    Note: (If you are applying as a non-degree seeker, GRE test scores are not required).

Departmental Requirements

The following must be completed or submitted to our Department:

  1. A minimum GPA of 3.00 for all upper-division and graduate coursework
  2. Applicant Information Sheet (Electronic Version | download paper form)
  3. Current Resume
  4. Three (3) Reference Forms with three (3) Letters of Recommendation - (See this link for instructions on completing the top section of the Reference Form.)
  5. Statement of Purpose - please provide a paper copy of your Statemement of Purpose that was submitted to GIAC

Principalship Program Requirements

In addition to the Department Requirements detailed above, The Principalship Program requires candidates to attend an Orientation Session, submit a Portfolio and portfolio review fee and deliver a sealed reference from a current supervisor. University faculty review all application and portfolio materials and select candidates to participate in a Site Visit. Final selection for admission is made during March.

  1. Orientation Session:  All interested applicants must participate in an informational Orientation Session. Dates and times of Orientation Sessions will be announced by the end of September. To sign up for one of these sessions, please visit the Principalship Orientation Session page after September 30.
  2. Portfolio & Portfolio Review Fee:  Candidates will receive portfolio requirements, materials needed to complete the portfolio, and a scoring rubric at Orientation. A completed portfolio must be submitted to room 310F, George Sanchez Building in January along a $30 check for the Portfolio Review Fee payable to The University of Texas at Austin.
  3. Three Sealed References: (see departmental requirements above): One reference must be from candidate’s current supervisor/principal.
  4. Site Visit/Assessment:  UT Faculty will review application and portfolio materials and select candidates for a site visit. Candidates selected for a site visit will be notified and a site visit scheduled during February.  Site Visits conducted by teams of university and school personnel consist of several components including a candidate interview and job-embedded observation.
  5. Acceptance to Program:  In March, those candidates selected for admission to The University of Texas at Austin Principalship Program will be notified and will be asked to submit written acceptance to the Graduate Advisor in April.
